Why the category confusion matters — and what it costs you

A new product category has emerged in the wellness industry over the past two years: the cryo lounge — sometimes called a cryo recliner, cryo chair, or sold under various brand names. They're appearing in major gym chains across the US and starting to surface in Australian facilities too.

The marketing positions them as a convenient, affordable form of cryotherapy. The pricing is positioned as the accessible entry point. The "cryo" in the name does a lot of heavy lifting.

Here's what doesn't get explained clearly: a cryo lounge and a whole-body cryotherapy chamber are fundamentally different products operating at fundamentally different temperatures. The therapeutic claims that apply to whole-body cryotherapy chambers — built on decades of peer-reviewed research — do not transfer to cryo lounges. The category name is the same. The physics, the physiology, and the outcomes are not.

1. The temperature gap nobody talks about

This is the single most important fact in this entire comparison.

Whole-body cryotherapy chambers operate at air temperatures between −110°C and −150°C (−166°F to −238°F). This is the temperature range the published cryotherapy research uses. This is the range in which the documented physiological effects — autonomic activation, anti-inflammatory response, mood elevation, recovery benefits — have been measured.

Cryo lounges operate at cold-zone temperatures of approximately −4°C to −1°C (25–30°F). This is the operating temperature range publicly stated by facilities that have installed these products, including military recovery facilities and large commercial gym chains. Manufacturers of lounge-style cryotherapy devices generally confirm this range when asked directly.

The difference between −120°C and −4°C is approximately 116°C — about the same temperature gap as between boiling water and a comfortable spring day. The marketing treats them as the same category. The physics doesn't.

To put this in perspective:

  • Your kitchen freezer: roughly −18°C

  • Coldest temperature ever recorded on Earth (Antarctica): −89.2°C

  • Cryo lounge cold zone: −4°C (warmer than your freezer)

  • Whole-body cryotherapy chamber: −120°C (colder than Antarctica)

A cryo lounge is not a colder version of a chamber. It is a different product operating in a different temperature regime, producing a different physiological response.

2. What the published research actually measured

When you read cryotherapy research published in peer-reviewed journals — meta-analyses on inflammation reduction, studies on muscle recovery, papers on mood improvement, sleep quality, vagal tone — almost all of it has been conducted at whole-body cryotherapy temperatures of −110°C or below.

This includes:

  • The 2025 Scientific Reports meta-analysis on inflammation reduction (11 randomised trials, all WBC at −110°C+)

  • The 2024 Cryobiology sleep quality study (WBC at therapeutic temperatures)

  • The 2021 Complementary Therapies in Medicine mental health systematic review (WBC studies at standard cryotherapy temperatures)

  • The 2019 European Journal of Sport Science sleep study (3-minute WBC sessions at therapeutic temperatures)

The Hausswirth research from 2013 specifically compared electric walk-in chambers to nitrogen cryosaunas — both producing whole-body cryotherapy. It found that whole-body cold exposure produced significantly greater activation of the autonomic nervous system than partial body cooling. The research did not extend to lounge-style devices operating at temperatures barely below freezing because, at that temperature range, the physiological response is fundamentally different.

There is essentially no published peer-reviewed research demonstrating the therapeutic effects associated with whole-body cryotherapy at the temperatures cryo lounges operate at. The body's autonomic response, the inflammation reduction, the documented mood effects — these were measured at temperatures more than 100°C colder than what a cryo lounge delivers.

This doesn't mean cryo lounges produce zero effect. Cold exposure at any temperature produces some response. But the magnitude of the response at −4°C is dramatically lower than at −120°C, and applying claims from one temperature regime to another is not scientifically supportable.

3. Whole-body vs partial-body vs cryo lounge: a clear comparison

Three distinct product categories, often marketed under the same umbrella term:

Whole-body cryotherapy chambers

  • Temperature: −110°C to −150°C

  • Exposure: entire body including head and neck

  • Cold delivery: dry air, convective cooling, sealed system

  • Session duration: 2–3 minutes

  • Therapeutic basis: well-documented in peer-reviewed research at these temperatures

  • Sensation: intense, brief, full-body cold

This is what the research and the legitimate cryotherapy industry refers to when discussing WBC.

Partial-body cryotherapy (cryosaunas)

  • Temperature: −140°C to −180°C (achievable with liquid nitrogen)

  • Exposure: body up to shoulders, head outside the chamber

  • Cold delivery: liquid nitrogen vapour, direct contact

  • Session duration: 2–3 minutes

  • Therapeutic basis: some research support, though Hausswirth and others found weaker autonomic response than whole-body

  • Sensation: intense cold below shoulders, normal air around head

Less effective than whole-body chambers per the Hausswirth research, but still operating in the actual therapeutic temperature range.

Cryo lounges / cryo recliners

  • Temperature: −4°C to −1°C in the cold zones (with heated zones elsewhere)

  • Exposure: localised cold-zone contact on specific body areas (typically back, legs); heat zones elsewhere

  • Cold delivery: Peltier-cooled or refrigerated contact pads

  • Session duration: 10–30 minutes

  • Therapeutic basis: minimal published research at these temperatures

  • Sensation: gentle cooling on contact areas, warmth elsewhere, comfortable

This is fundamentally a localised cold-and-heat contact therapy marketed using cryotherapy terminology. It is not whole-body cryotherapy by any operational definition.

4. Cost comparison — purchase, install, and operating

For an operator considering both categories, here's the honest math.

Cryo lounge (recliner-style devices)

  • Purchase price: approximately AUD $25,000–$45,000

  • Install requirements: standard 10–15A power outlet; no special infrastructure

  • Install cost: typically minimal, sometimes self-install

  • Footprint: similar to a large recliner — roughly 2.5m² floor space

  • Ongoing electricity: approximately $2–$4 per day

  • Consumables: minimal — sanitising wipes for the contact surfaces

  • Warranty: typically 12 months, sometimes 24 with paid extensions

  • Recovery time between sessions: essentially zero — next client steps in immediately

  • Typical session duration: 15–30 minutes

Total operator investment (year 1): approximately $26,000–$47,000 including install

KRYO KUBE whole-body chamber (UNO or KUB class)

  • Purchase price: approximately AUD $35,000–$70,000 depending on model

  • Install requirements: standard 10A Australian wall outlet

  • Install cost: $0 — plug into the wall

Traditional commercial three-phase cryotherapy chamber

For reference, here's what the comparison looks like against a traditional industrial chamber:

  • Purchase price: AUD $80,000–$150,000+

  • Install requirements: three-phase 400V commercial power

  • Install cost: $8,000–$40,000 depending on premises

  • Footprint: 5–8m²

  • Ongoing electricity: $1,000–$2,500/month at commercial rates

  • Consumables: maintenance contracts $200–$500/month

  • Warranty: typically 12 months

  • Total operator investment (year 1): $100,000–$200,000+

What this comparison actually shows

A cryo lounge is cheaper to buy than a KRYO KUBE chamber. That's true. But the upfront cost difference disappears within months when you look at the per-session economics — because the lounge requires 5–10x more session time per client to recover its cost.

A cryo lounge is vastly cheaper than a traditional three-phase commercial chamber. Also true. 5. Cost comparison — what each costs the consumer per session

This is where the categories diverge sharply.

Cryo lounge pricing

  • At Australian facilities: emerging market, typically $15–$40 per session or included in membership tiers

  • The economics: low operating cost allows low per-session pricing, but session duration is 15–30 minutes, reducing throughput

Traditional whole-body chamber pricing (Australia)

  • CBD premium facilities: $99–$130 per session

  • Mid-market boutique recovery studios: $60–$95 per session

  • Memberships: $200–$400/month unlimited

KRYO KUBE-equipped facility pricing

  • Operator base cost recovery: enables session pricing from $35 upward

  • Typical KRYO KUBE-operator pricing: $35–$60 per session

  • Memberships: can be priced significantly lower than traditional facilities while maintaining margin

The honest interpretation

A cryo lounge at $15–$25 per session looks like extraordinary value next to a $99 traditional cryotherapy session. But you're not getting the same product. You're paying $15–$25 for 20 minutes of localised cold-and-heat therapy at temperatures barely below freezing. You're not paying for the documented whole-body cryotherapy response.

A KRYO KUBE-equipped facility at $35–$50 per session offers something genuinely different: actual whole-body cryotherapy at therapeutic temperatures, at a price point that's competitive with the lounges. Same affordability category, dramatically different product.

If a consumer is choosing between "$20 cryo lounge" and "$99 traditional chamber," the lounge looks like the rational choice. If they're choosing between "$20 cryo lounge" and "$40 KRYO KUBE chamber session," the math changes — they can have real whole-body cryotherapy for only $20 more per session, and the difference in physiological response is roughly two orders of magnitude.

6. Where cryo lounges actually make sense

To be fair to the category: cryo lounges aren't useless. They're being marketed for things they can't deliver, but they do something — just something different from what their name suggests.

Where they're genuinely useful:

  • Comfort-focused contrast therapy. The combination of localised cold and heat is genuinely relaxing. Most users describe the experience as pleasant, which is rare for actual cold therapy modalities. For relaxation and gentle recovery, lounges work.

  • Recovery accessibility for users who can't tolerate intense cold. Some clients — elderly users, people with cold sensitivity, those new to cold therapy — simply won't tolerate −120°C cryotherapy. A lounge at −4°C gives them something in the recovery category they can use.

  • High-traffic gym amenity at low operational cost. As a "wellness add-on" that members can use without staff supervision, lounges work well. The gym-chain model treats them as another piece of recovery equipment alongside massage chairs and compression boots — which is honest positioning.

  • Light recovery between gym sessions. For a member who's lifted heavy that morning and wants 20 minutes of localised cooling on their back, a lounge delivers exactly that. It's not whole-body cryotherapy, but it's not nothing.

The honest framing for cryo lounges: they're a premium massage chair with cooling capability, not a cryotherapy chamber. Marketed honestly, they'd be a solid product. Marketed as "cryotherapy" — particularly when chamber-temperature research is implied to apply to them — they're misleading consumers.

7. Where cryo lounges don't make sense

For operators trying to build a real recovery or cryotherapy business: a cryo lounge doesn't replace a chamber. If your business model depends on delivering documented cryotherapy outcomes — for athletes, for clinical recovery, for high-end wellness positioning — the lounge can't do the job the chamber does. Operators sold lounges as "the affordable alternative to chambers" are being misled.

For consumers seeking the actual benefits documented in cryotherapy research: the inflammation reduction, autonomic activation, recovery acceleration, and mood effects measured in WBC studies don't transfer to lounge temperatures. A consumer who reads about cryotherapy benefits in a magazine and then uses a cryo lounge expecting those benefits will be disappointed.

For premium-positioned wellness facilities: cryo lounges are increasingly common at mainstream gym chains. Premium facilities that install them risk diluting their premium positioning. The market is sorting itself — chambers signal serious cryotherapy, lounges signal accessible recovery amenity.

For anyone marketing the product: every operator marketing a cryo lounge as "cryotherapy" without clarifying the temperature difference is contributing to category confusion that ultimately damages consumer trust across the entire cryotherapy industry. When customers discover the temperature gap (and they eventually do), they often conclude that allcryotherapy is overhyped — which damages legitimate chamber operators.

8. Why KRYO KUBE was built differently

The existence of the cryo lounge category isn't an accident. It exists because the traditional cryotherapy industry created a price gap that needed filling.

9. Questions to ask if you're considering either for your business

Before purchasing either a cryo lounge or a chamber, get specific answers in writing:

For cryo lounge manufacturers:

  1. What's the actual cold-zone temperature in degrees Celsius? (Not "wind chill," not "perceived" — measured.)

  2. Has any peer-reviewed research been conducted on this device at its actual operating temperature?

  3. Can you provide research demonstrating systemic (not localised) physiological effects at this temperature?

  4. What's the warranty coverage and service response time in Australia?

For chamber manufacturers (including us):

  1. What's the actual measured air temperature inside the chamber with a client inside, mid-session?

  2. What are the total install costs at my premises (including electrical infrastructure)?

  3. What does it actually cost to operate per session, including all consumables?

  4. What's the recovery time between sessions?

  5. Can I speak to current Australian operators using this chamber?

If a cryo lounge manufacturer can't (or won't) answer questions 2 and 3 — they're acknowledging that the product doesn't have the research base their marketing implies. If a chamber manufacturer can't answer the four chamber questions clearly, walk away.

The honest bottom line

Cryo lounges and whole-body cryotherapy chambers are two different products marketed under the same category name. They produce different physiological responses, are backed by different evidence bases, and serve different business purposes.

If you want to offer your clients a comfortable recovery experience at low cost with minimal staff involvement, a cryo lounge is a reasonable choice — as long as you market it honestly as a recovery amenity rather than as cryotherapy.

If you want to offer your clients the documented benefits of whole-body cryotherapy — the inflammation reduction, the autonomic activation, the recovery and mood effects measured in peer-reviewed research — you need a chamber operating at therapeutic temperatures. The lounge can't do that job.
