The Complete Cryotherapy Beginner's Guide
Everything you need to know before your first session — including the parts most facilities won't tell you
This guide is the honest answer to every question you have before your first cryotherapy session. It's written by KRYO KUBE — an Australian cryotherapy chamber manufacturer — but we've tried to give you the genuinely useful version rather than a sales pitch. That means including the parts where the science is mixed, where the marketing has outrun the evidence, and where cryotherapy genuinely isn't the right answer.

1. What cryotherapy actually is
Whole-body cryotherapy (WBC) exposes your body to extremely cold air — typically between −110°C and −150°C — for two to three minutes, inside a sealed chamber.
The cold is dry. The session is brief. You don't get wet. You're not submerged. You stand in a small enclosed space, the air around you is rapidly cooled to a temperature far below anything found naturally on Earth, and your body responds.
There are two main technologies used to produce that cold:
Electric cryotherapy chambers use industrial refrigeration to cool the chamber air. The cold is dry, the system is sealed, and the chamber requires no consumable inputs — just electricity. KRYO KUBE manufactures electric chambers.
Nitrogen cryotherapy chambers vent liquid nitrogen into the chamber. The cold is produced as the nitrogen evaporates from liquid to gas, absorbing heat as it does. These systems require ongoing liquid nitrogen supply and typically expose the body only up to the shoulders, with the head outside the chamber.
The difference matters for the cost economics we'll cover below. For everything else in this guide, we're referring to whole-body cryotherapy in either type of chamber.
2. What it feels like
Most facilities answer this question evasively — usually with marketing language like "refreshing and invigorating."Here's the truthful version.
For the first 30 to 45 seconds, you'll feel a sharp, prickling cold across your skin. It's intense but not painful in any sustained way. Your skin temperature drops rapidly. Your breathing speeds up slightly — your body is recognising the cold and triggering the same nervous-system response it would in any sudden environmental challenge.
Between 45 seconds and the two-minute mark, the sensation often becomes more tolerable rather than less. This is consistent with how cold receptors in the skin work — they fire most intensely at the moment of temperature change, then adapt. Many people report a kind of focused, alert calmness during this middle phase.
In the final 30 seconds, the cold often feels like it's been a while. You become aware of the time.
When you step out, the immediate sensation is warmth. Within 10 to 15 minutes, most people report an elevated, slightly euphoric mood. This is a real physiological response — your body has released endorphins and norepinephrine.
The experience is intense but brief. Almost everyone who tries it once will try it again. Almost no one finds it traumatic. Almost everyone says the anticipation was worse than the reality.
3. What the evidence actually supports
We're going to do this differently to most cryotherapy articles. We'll tell you what the published peer-reviewed evidence currently supports, what it doesn't, and where it's genuinely unclear.
Inflammation reduction (supported)
A 2025 meta-analysis in Scientific Reports synthesised data from 11 randomised controlled trials and found that whole-body cryotherapy produces a measurable reduction in systemic inflammatory markers. A 2024 pilot study in the Interactive Journal of Medical Research found the same effect in healthy adults, suggesting the benefit isn't limited to people with existing inflammatory conditions.
If you're an active person experiencing exercise-induced inflammation, or living with low-grade chronic inflammation, this is the most evidence-supported claim cryotherapy makes.
Muscle recovery and reduced soreness (supported)
Multiple randomised trials have found whole-body cryotherapy reduces perceived muscle soreness and improves subjective recovery following intense exercise. The effect is consistent enough that cryotherapy has been adopted across professional sport — AFL, NRL, and English Premier League clubs all use some form of cold therapy for athlete recovery.
The mechanism is partly the inflammation reduction noted above, partly the autonomic nervous system response — cold exposure activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the body's recovery state.
Mood and depressive symptoms (preliminary support)
A 2021 systematic review in Complementary Therapies in Medicine concluded that whole-body cryotherapy shows preliminary efficacy as an add-on intervention for mental health problems, particularly depressive symptoms. The studies were small and the authors flagged the need for larger samples — but the direction of effect is consistent.
For people without a clinical mood disorder, several studies have found modest improvements in general mood and wellbeing, with effects appearing within minutes of a session and lasting hours.
Sleep quality (preliminary support)
A 2024 study in Cryobiology found measurable sleep-quality improvements in healthy young adults after repeated cryostimulation. A 2019 study in the European Journal of Sport Science found that 3-minute evening WBC sessions improved sleep quality in physically active men.
Not enough to call sleep improvement guaranteed. Enough to call it a plausible benefit with consistent direction across studies.
4. What the evidence doesn't support (or supports weakly)
This is where most cryotherapy content falls apart. We're giving you the honest version.
Weight loss (mixed at best)
The most over-claimed benefit in cryotherapy marketing. The mechanism cited — cold exposure activates brown adipose tissue, which burns calories to generate heat — is real. The leap to "cryotherapy causes weight loss" is not supported by strong evidence.
The most-cited longer-term study combined moderate aerobic exercise with 40 cryotherapy sessions over six months and found no lasting changes in body weight or fat mass attributable to the cold treatment specifically. Brown fat activation is real, but it doesn't appear to translate into meaningful weight loss on its own.
If a facility tells you cryotherapy will help you lose significant weight, they're outrunning the evidence.
Anti-ageing and collagen production (weak evidence)
Claims about cryotherapy reversing visible ageing or boosting collagen production are mostly extrapolations from circulation and inflammation effects. There are no large, well-controlled studies showing measurable improvements in skin ageing markers from whole-body cryotherapy.
The skin will feel different after a session — mild flushing, altered circulation — but "anti-ageing" as a clinical claim is not supported.
Immune system "boosting" (unclear)
Cryotherapy appears to alter immune function and inflammatory pathways, but the impact on real-world illness is genuinely unclear. There's no good evidence that cryotherapy reduces colds, flu, or infections. Marketing claims that cryotherapy "boosts your immune system" are not currently supported.
Cognitive improvement (early-stage research only)
A 2021 study on 84 older adults with subjective cognitive impairment found modest cognitive improvements following nine weeks of cryotherapy. Interesting, but preliminary. Don't expect cryotherapy to be a cognitive enhancer.
5. Cryotherapy vs ice baths vs cold plunges
These three modalities are often treated as competitors, but they actually do somewhat different things.
Ice baths and cold plunges
Cold water immersion involves submerging the body (or lower body) in water at 4°C to 12°C, for 2 to 15 minutes. The cold reaches the body via conductive heat transfer through water — highly efficient, because water conducts heat about 25 times faster than air.
Cold plunges do well: sustained vagal response, psychological challenge (you have to choose to stay in), grounding/meditative quality from the longer duration, significantly cheaper to set up.
Cold plunges don't do as well: reach extreme temperatures, allow you to keep your head above the cold, stay dry, fit into a busy schedule.
Whole-body cryotherapy
Cryotherapy exposes the body to dry air at −110°C to −150°C, for 2 to 3 minutes. The cold reaches the body via convective heat transfer through air — less efficient than water, which is why the air can be so much colder in such a short window.
Cryotherapy does well: reach much lower temperatures than water can, stay dry (you can do it before work), fit into a small time window, produce a sharp brief autonomic response.
Cryotherapy doesn't do as well: provide the same duration of cold exposure, replicate the meditative quality of cold water immersion.
The honest verdict
Both work. They produce overlapping but slightly different physiological responses. For most people, the right answer is whichever they'll actually do consistently — three minutes in a chamber three mornings a week beats a fifteen-minute plunge they never get around to.
For elite athletes and high-performance use cases, the case for cryotherapy is stronger because of the lower temperatures and dry-cold delivery. For people who enjoy meditative practice and have time, cold water immersion may suit better.
You don't have to choose. Many people use both.
6. How often, how long, how cold
Session duration: 2 to 3 minutes. Longer doesn't appear to produce additional benefit and increases cold injury risk. Shorter than 90 seconds may not produce the full physiological response.
Frequency: For general wellness and recovery, 2 to 3 sessions per week is the most commonly recommended protocol. For specific outcomes — post-injury recovery, training-camp use, depressive symptom support — daily sessions for 1 to 4 weeks appear in the literature. Benefits are most pronounced when sessions are frequent during an initial two-to-four week period.
Temperature: The therapeutic window is between −110°C and −140°C. Below approximately −25°C, the air becomes dry enough that water vapour deposits directly as ice crystals — the phenomenon we call diamond dust. Sessions at warmer "perceived" temperatures (some chambers market −85°C wind chill) may not produce the same physiological response.
If you're considering a chamber and the operating temperature is listed as a "perceived" or "wind chill" temperature rather than the actual measured air temperature, ask about it.
Cumulative effects: A single session produces immediate but short-lived changes — improved mood, reduced inflammation for several hours. Regular sessions over weeks appear to produce more durable adaptations.
7. What to wear and what to expect
What to wear
Standard cryotherapy attire is minimal — underwear or swimwear, with dry socks and gloves provided by the facility to protect extremities. Many facilities provide a robe. Women may have the option to be undressed entirely; men typically wear underwear or shorts.
Dry is critical: any moisture on your skin or clothing freezes essentially instantly at chamber temperature. Even slightly damp clothing can cause localised cold injury. If you've sweated, showered, or got caught in the rain on your way in, you'll need to dry off completely before entering.
What to remove: all metal jewellery, watches, piercings. Metal in contact with skin at chamber temperatures can cause cold burns rapidly.
The session itself
A brief consultation with the operator first — they'll ask about health conditions, check for contraindications, and explain what to expect. This usually takes longer than the session.
You change in a private room, put on the provided socks and gloves, dry yourself completely, and step into the chamber. The door closes. The session timer counts down. Most chambers have visible timing displays, some have ambient music or soft lighting. You can step out at any time — the door is never locked.
When the timer ends, you step out. First sensation is warmth. The whole experience from arriving to leaving usually takes 15 to 30 minutes.
What might surprise you
The cold doesn't feel as intense as you expect. Dry cold is genuinely more tolerable than wet cold.
Time inside the chamber feels distorted. Three minutes can feel like 30 seconds or 10 minutes.
The mood lift afterward is real and surprisingly strong, especially the first time.
You may feel a tingling or pins-and-needles sensation in the final 30 seconds. Normal. Disappears within seconds of exiting.
8. Who shouldn't do cryotherapy
Any reputable facility will go through this list with you before your first session. Whole-body cryotherapy is not appropriate for people with:
Pregnancy
Severe uncontrolled hypertension (blood pressure above 180/100)
Recent heart attack, unstable angina, or symptomatic cardiovascular disease
Cardiac pacemaker
Severe peripheral arterial disease
Deep vein thrombosis or acute venous disorders
Recent stroke or cerebrovascular event
Uncontrolled seizure disorder
Raynaud's syndrome
Severe cold allergy or cold urticaria
Active fever or infection
Active cancer treatment (without specific medical clearance)
Severe lung disorders
Bleeding disorders or severe anaemia
Open wounds or ulcers in the area to be exposed
Acute kidney or urinary tract conditions
Being under the influence of alcohol or recreational drugs
If you have any of the above, talk to your doctor before considering cryotherapy. A good facility will refuse to provide a session if you have an absolute contraindication, even if you ask.
For less acute conditions (diabetes, autoimmune conditions, chronic pain, history of mental health treatment), a conversation with your GP before starting cryotherapy is worth it. Usually the answer is fine. Sometimes it isn't.
9. Why cryotherapy costs what it costs — and why it doesn't have to
This is where the cryotherapy industry has a problem it doesn't talk about openly.
A single whole-body cryotherapy session in Australia typically costs $99 to $120, with package pricing bringing it down to $50–$80 per session. Sydney's largest cryotherapy chain charges $99 per session across five locations. Major-city wellness centres charge similar.
The reason isn't that the service is worth $99 of value to the customer every time. The reason is that the underlying cost structure of running a traditional cryotherapy chamber is high — and the facility has to charge enough to recover it.
What's actually driving traditional session prices
Nitrogen chambers require ongoing liquid nitrogen supply. The nitrogen is consumed every session. Facilities typically spend $1,000–$3,000 per month on nitrogen alone. That cost has to be passed through to the customer.
Three-phase electric chambers (the high-power industrial systems used at premium facilities) require commercial power infrastructure that costs tens of thousands to install, with running costs often exceeding $40 per day in electricity. Again, passed through to the customer.
Maintenance contracts and consumable parts on industrial-grade systems add further ongoing cost.
When you put all of that together, traditional facilities need to charge $99 a session just to operate profitably. That's not greed — that's the underlying economics.

You don't have to pay $99 to access proper whole-body cryotherapy. The technology to deliver the same therapeutic temperatures at a third of the operating cost exists. Look for facilities running KRYO KUBE chambers or other modern electric systems — they typically charge $35–$60 per session instead of $99–$120.
What about doing it at home?
A residential KRYO KUBE chamber starts at around $35,000. The math:
Per session if you do it 3x per week: roughly $1.50 in electricity
Pays back vs $99/session traditional facility: in about 2.5 years for a single user
Pays back vs $50/session electric facility: in about 4.5 years
For a household where multiple people would use it regularly, the per-session economics become significantly better than any commercial alternative — usually within 18 months.
10. How to find a good cryotherapy facility
Most Australian cities now have multiple cryotherapy options. Here's how to evaluate them.
Questions to ask the facility
What's the actual operating temperature? A good answer is a specific number in the −110°C to −150°C range. A vague answer ("very cold") or a "perceived temperature" claim is a red flag.
Electric or nitrogen? Both can be reputable. Electric chambers tend to be quieter, dry, and more consistent session-to-session. Nitrogen chambers can sometimes reach lower temperatures but require ongoing nitrogen supply and typically expose only the body, not the head.
How long has the operator been doing cryotherapy? Experienced operators recognise contraindications, manage clients safely, and produce better outcomes.
Is there a consultation before the first session? A facility that puts you straight into the chamber without screening isn't following responsible protocols.
What does a session actually cost? If it's $99–$120, that doesn't mean it's a better chamber — it usually just means the operator has higher infrastructure costs. Ask what model of chamber they use.
Red flags
Aggressive medical claims ("cures inflammation," "burns fat fast," "anti-ageing miracle")
No safety screening or contraindication discussion
Inability to tell you the actual operating temperature
High-pressure sales tactics on packages before your first session
Visible nitrogen condensation fog in promotional photos with no explanation (most of what looks like cold is actually room-humidity condensate)
Green flags
Clear written list of contraindications and pre-session questions
Specific, transparent information about chamber operating temperature
Trained operator present for every session
Reasonable, evidence-aligned claims about what cryotherapy does and doesn't do
Aftercare or post-session resting area
Clean facility, dry environment, well-maintained equipment
11. Questions worth asking yourself
What's your actual goal?
Cryotherapy is a tool, not a complete protocol. If your goal is post-exercise recovery, the evidence is strong. If your goal is significant weight loss, the evidence is much weaker — you'd be better served by nutrition and resistance training first. If your goal is mood support, the evidence is preliminary but promising, and it's reasonable to try.
Being clear about your goal helps you evaluate the experience afterward.
How often will you actually do it?
The evidence is strongest for regular use. A single session produces real but short-lived effects. If you can commit to 2–3 sessions per week for at least 4 weeks, you'll be in the protocol range where the research applies.
What does your medical history actually look like?
Be honest with yourself about contraindications. The conditions in section 8 genuinely change the risk-benefit calculation. A good facility will screen you carefully; you can also screen yourself.
